Investigate Shakespeare’s Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet from an actor’s perspective
With a Rehearsal Room Shakespeare drama workshop, your school hall becomes an actors’ rehearsal room. Your Year 10 or 11 class becomes a company of actors, approaching the text of Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth through techniques drawn from professional theatre.
Not many GCSE students are Shakespeare experts, and in the same way not many actors are scholars. Instead, when actors rehearse a play they use rehearsal room techniques designed to make the story and characters truly accessible. By exploring punctuation, language and themes on a practical level, our fast-paced drama sessions lift the text off the page and bring it to life. By learning to perform a character, students can learn to talk about and write about that character in future.
During the sessions, students from Year 10 or Year 11 work class-by-class, guided by a professional actor. Activities explore different elements of the play, from the punctuation in a single extract to a character’s journey through the story. By using techniques that an actor would use to prepare a script, we prep students for an exam by giving them tools to help them look at text and analyse the play as a whole.

The workshop is designed as a practical exploration of a play that your students are already studying, and has been created for Year 10 and 11 students preparing for their GCSEs.
During the sessions pupils will develop their knowledge of the language, character relationships and themes. Quotes are introduced throughout the session as the students explore key moments from the play through drama. Guided by a professional facilitator, the sessions use techniques drawn from professional theatre rehearsal rooms to create a positive experience of Shakespeare’s writing in a physical, interactive and engaging way.
