Staff Director for Jack and the Beanstalk

(Must be able to learn and teach simple choreography)

Our vision and mission

Every child’s imagination should be inspired by the arts. Our mission is to use the skills of the professional theatre to provide highly creative learning experiences to children which they will remember for ever.

We value creativity, efficiency, fairness (including the Living Wage) and ongoing relationships between our performers, the company and our customers.

The work

This year we are producing 4 pantomimes and are recruiting for a staff director to rehearse additional cast members into Jack and the Beanstalk between Thursday 10th and Tuesday 29th November. This will be on a Monday to Friday basis at a London rehearsal venue. We will teach the staff director the show between Mon 31st October and Friday 4th November.
The shows are written by Andrew Emerson and Alex Silverman and directed by Ryan McBryde. They are performed by a cast of two professional musical theatre actors, visiting primary schools between mid-November and January.
The shows are performed in traverse by one male and one female actor. The rehearsal process for each actor is 3 days long and there are between 2 and 3 pairs of actors in the room each day (who will all be on their first, second or third day respectively).
The pay for the work is £100 per day, payable in weekly instalments for work done the previous week. We are currently budgeting for between £1,500 and £2,000 depending on the agreed earning days schedule.

The staff director will need to teach both blocking and choreography (this is simple!) but no music, as this will be done by our MD. The role requires attention to detail whilst working at speed as the rehearsal process for each actor is short. The staff director should be committed to creating the best possible performance with each actor. The work will be fun but also fast paced for both performers and the director.
Interviews will be held in London in the week beginning Monday 5th September 2016.

Here is a song from the show, sung here by Jess Robinson and Simon Lipkin, to give you a sense of the piece.
